How to hit golf irons
Beginners often complain that golf is an unnecessarily confusing game. Just when they get the hang of using woods for driving off the tee, they learn that one can use irons as well for driving off the tee. Why have two different clubs for the same function? Why use golf driving irons when a woods is perfect for the same task?
Well, if driving a golf ball as far as possible had been the sole purpose of the game, then even a single golf club would have sufficed. However, the basic purpose is to propel the ball into the hole and no two holes on any course are the same. A par 5 hole may find even professionals grabbing for their best woods. On the other hand, a par 3 course where the golfer has better chance of a hole in one by shooting far and shooting low makes it necessary to use an iron.
Irons are called so because they were traditionally made of iron. Woods are called so because these clubs were traditionally made of wood. If the function of a wood was to take the ball as close as possible to the hole off the tee, the function of the iron was to enable the golfer to hit the ball to the hole over shorter distances. A set of iron clubs consists of a 3-irons, a 4-irons, a 5-irons, a 6-irons, a 7-irons, an 8-irons, and a 9-irons. Apart from this, you have wedges and 1-irons and 2-irons.
A 3-irons has the lowest loft (the angle between the actual surface of the club head and the vertical face of the head) while the 9-irons will have the maximum loft. As the loft increases, the length of the iron decreases. Wedges are designed to help the golfer wedge the ball out of a bunker or a rough. Types of this club include pitching, Sand and Lob wedges.
All the irons are designed to be used when the golfer approaches the green and the hole. Of course, there is no fixed rule as the golfer can use any club that suits him or her best. However, the 3-9 irons are rarely used for driving off the tee. The 1-irons and 2-irons are used for this purpose. These two clubs are often called golf driving irons as they are longer than the 3-irons and have a lesser loft. The club head of the 1-irons is almost flat.
Why would a golfer want to use an irons for driving a golf ball when a woods (not Tiger Woods mind you J) is sufficient? The irons will help you control your drive better. The 1-irons and 2-irons are really tough to master. Many beginners prefer using a hybrid club instead. However, you will have a significant advantage over all your competitors if you master the tough clubs.
To achieve this, you need lots and lots of practice. If you are not in a position to visit the golf course daily, you should get a golf driving mat that will help you practice indoors as well. Practicing on any surface other than a grass mat is not advisable. Even a golf driving mat made of artificial grass will do. The idea is to get the feel of standing on grass and mastering the difficult drive using an iron club.
